Top 5 Misconceptions about Diamond Engagement Rings

It seems like there are endless facts out there when you start researching engagement rings. From the 4C’s of diamond buying to the number of months salary you should spend on a ring, the ‘experts’ are always telling you how, and what, to buy. But what about the many wrong ideas buyers encounter as they search for the ideal proposal jewel? It’s time to take a look at the top five misconceptions about diamond engagement rings.

1. Only Size Matters

Let’s face it: If she only cares about the size of the rock, she’s probably not the right girl. But all kidding aside, most women aren’t looking for the largest ring out there; they’re looking for the ring that fits their style and personality. Women are educated about diamond color and clarity, and they too want to own a diamond that will hold its value--not a stone that is big but low in quality. Instead of going overboard in size, take the time to explore what kind of cut she likes and then go for the best quality that your budget allows.

2. Same is Better

While women sometimes envy a handbag or pair of shoes that a friend owns, they usually are not interested in having the exact same engagement ring as a friend or relative. Today, women truly value a special piece of jewelry that speaks to their husband’s ability to seek out the unique. The best tactic is to take the characteristics of another ring she likes, but then put a spin on it. For example, if she loves her cousin’s white gold, three-stone diamond engagement ring with a princess cut diamond, look for something in a similar style but with a twist: like this Three Stone ring made for a round center stone.

3. Matching bands are necessary

For a while, every single bridal designer was marketing a matching band with each engagement ring offered. While it might make the process easier for some brides and grooms, this notion of ‘matching sets’ has become a bit outdated. As engagement rings have become more unusual and less status quo, bands too have taken a turn for the unique. Women today are opting to stack simple bands as anniversary gifts, or to choose statement bands that they instead wear on their right hand.

4. White is Always Right

Yes, it’s still true that white diamonds and white metal are the number one choice for engagement rings. But it’s also true that women are much more open-minded to seeing alternate materials and colors in that little box. Yellow gold and Rose gold are seeing a renaissance in engagement rings right now, and rose is an especially flattering metal on most any skin tone. Colored diamonds are also experiencing a surge in popularity, and are a fantastic choice for an unconventional bride. A deep orange-yellow diamond ring or a natural yellow diamond floral ring may be just the thing to make her say ‘yes’.

5. You need to be an expert

Rest assured, you do not need to be a gemologist to choose the right diamond, nor a fashion expert to choose the right setting. Three simple steps can make the right choice a snap: First, do a bit of homework. Second, choose a reliable resource when shopping for diamond engagement rings. Third, make sure your stone is properly insured.

Now there's a snappy phrase in the title there that press releases love to churn out for a highly memorable bitesized chunk. That said, without going into long polemics, overreaching prose and longwinded back stories, sometimes it is as simple as those two words. I've arrived in Paris a day earlier than I normally would for one reason only.

Anthony Vaccarello, with whom you may be familiar with if you're a regular read of the blog, as I've been tracking his work since his early days (he also happens to be a very close friend... yarsh... nepotist alert) presented his A/W 10-11 collection as the first 'show/presentation' to kick of Paris Fashion Week. Being on-schedule for the first time is of course a whole kettle of fish from doing more private showrooms but the static presentation at Palais Royal was most definitely still intimate enough for the throng of people to get up close and personal with Anthony's scope of "urban lingerie". At least I hope they did get up close and personal to really inspect all the details that Anthony had worked into each piece, playing with various opacities of black, going for a subtle texture contrast that isn't immediately detectable unless you start to touch. Once again, these are feats of craftsmanship that I know for a fact Anthony worked his socks off, making because for him, an idea is only half-baked if the finishing doesn't back it up. Hardware has come off the lapels and instead have become giant necklaces that share a geometric symmetry with the clothes.

Having seen the patterns for these pieces, everything is done by strict-ruler precision giving everything a sharpness that actually for the first time, isn't completely untouchable. The sculptural florals of his A/W 09 collection may have been an ask in terms of wearing and those giant gems of last season could also have done some serious physical damage but take these ensembles apart or as they are and these are more open to instant-wearing and slipping into. Or at least for me, it's my kind of apparel for "

You know how much I love backs.... well, when they're this good, they really deserve shots of their own. The one on the right in particular takes the biscuit...

Lou Doillon seems to think so too as she was so enamoured with his work, she very kindly agreed to model the lookbook where I think her own spirit fuses well with that of the collection...

Honestly, I could *tear* up a little but that would be sad and pathetic considering it's only the first day of Paris fashion week. I'm crossing my fingers for Anthony on several accounts and next season, it will be veeeeery exciting and I'm incredibly grateful that I've been able to track the progress until the point where probably blog posts like this one will stand redundant against the mountains of hyper-high-end-press.

Asian Eye Make Up pictures

As many of you have noted, the western way of eye-make up application simply does not work as well for Asian eyes due to different structures. So to make sure that Asians have some summer make-up fun as well, I've found some Asian inspirations for you.

As much as I didn't like Gina on last season's ANTM, her being on the show DID teach us something about Asian eye make-up application (I checked April as well, but she had western eyes). I love this dramatic blue fading effect with the smidgen of silver at the corners. Looks fairy-like.

A bit of eyeliner, a lot of mascara and some pinkish eye shadow, the look is very simple yet sophisticated.

For something edgier, here they used the usual mascara, eye liner and bronze-ish eye shadow, but added a black line underneath the eye to give it a more edgier effect emphasizing the slant of the eyes.

Fresh off the runway, is the pale pink lipped fresh faced look. For that effect, observe the asian models- Hye Park at Giambattista Valli and Han at Peter Som.

Then of course there is Du Juan. Love the sexy red lips and those lashes!! They are so perfectly long and curled!!

For more star style, take note from Ziyi Zhang and Lucy Liu. I just love the fresh faced look of Ziyi Zhang, it looks so natural (like nothing is on it) and yet we know a lot of effort was probably put into it.
